Nicholas DilleHead of Technology and Innovation"For several years, I have been working as an IT architect for sepago where I specialize in centralized computing, virtualization and performance monitoring. Since September 2008, I am managing the unit called Technology and Innovation which is responsible for knowledge transfer, our technology specialists and the technological alignment of the company. I was a student of computer science at the University of Bonn focussing on wired and wireless networking as well as mobile networks. In the summer of 2004, I obtained my diploma and was hired by sepago shortly afterwards. I have written and published a document about Public Key Infrastructures (PKI) called The Practical Guide to Public Key Infrastructures which offers a hands-on introduction to PKI using OpenSSL. Before and during my time at university, I worked as system administrator for several companies managing linux and unix servers and Windows clients. I built linux thin clients for one of those company and participated in multiple projects like Linux From Scratch and gentoo. Contacting meFor obvious reasons, I am very cautious about publishing my email address on these pages. But you can assemble it by concatenating my first and last name (separated by a dot). The right-hand side of the address is built from the company I work for and the appropriate ccTLD (country-code top-level domain) for Germany. Alternatively, remove “blogs” from the FQDN of this server. Got it? ;-) About Sepago: "sepago, das heißt für mich: Arbeiten in einem professionellen Team, das sehr gut zusammenhält. In today’s world passwords are necessary for almost anything - this is especially true in a managed corporate environment. Whereas in the past a user was required to memorize many passwords for different applications and databases, IT departments are now expected to implement federated authentication mechanisms to reduce the number of passwords per user. Consequently, Citrix offers Passthrough Authentication in addition to traditional explicit authentication. Unfortunately, the concept is widely misunderstood resulting in unexpected behaviour expecially in external access scenarios. This article provides a detailed description how Citrix passthrough authentication works, what it does and especially what it does not. |

Real-Life Experiences with Windows 8 Beta

Last year I started out on a quest for a new laptop. I had two important requirements for a new device: mobility and tablet capabilities. Why is that you may ask yourself. For a few months I had been noticing a change in my work style. While I had always needed to run virtual machines on my laptop, I had long begun to move them to the cloud. I already talked about this at ice:2011 (German). Meanwhile virtual machines became less relevant for my work as I needed collaboration, taking notes, presentations and drawing infrastructure diagrams interactively with customers. So I decided I needed a more agile device – so much for the mobility requirement. At the same time, Microsoft was already talking about the upcoming successor of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. I wanted to be able to test the new version as it was meant to be – a touch-optimized OS. So there’s the second requirement. Finally, I decided to get a Lenovo X220 Tablet – a convertible laptop. Due to its lean form factory and powerful battery it has become the perfect companion for my mobile work style. In the following sections I will focus on different aspects of the new Windows 8 Beta while I have been running for a few weeks now.

Since I have begun working in the virtualization business, customers have been asking for reasons why to spend money for Citrix XenApp and whether Remote Desktop Services (RDS) cuts it for them. For a long time, the answer was easy as hosted sessions on Windows Remote Desktop Services – formerly Terminal Services – have only provided basic functionality. But beginning with Windows Server 2008, Microsoft has put a lot of effort into that space. The underlying roles were steadily improved in every version, e.g. to support rich graphics and virtual desktops. With the public beta of the next Windows Server (8), Microsoft has improved the performance of RDP and built new management capabilities into Server Manager. From my point of view this may well be changing the game with Citrix with respect to hosted sessions. Let’s have a closer look. |
